Blue Barren Distillery

INSPIRED BY THE TRADITIONAL EUROPEAN FARM DISTILLERY

Longtime friends Andrew Stewart and Jeremy Howard founded Blue Barren Distillery in 2018. Andrew, a native of Scotland, spent his teen years visiting whisky distilleries and working in pubs and restaurants before moving to Maine. Eventually, Andrew opened his own pub in Camden with a focus on traditional food and single malts. Jeremy, a seventh-generation blueberry farmer, was in the pub one winter’s evening talking with Andrew about the difficult time Maine’s blueberry industry was having. They decided to tap into this local resource and distill blueberries using traditional French Eau de Vie and Calvados methods.

Two years later, Andrew and Jeremy opened the doors of Blue Barren Distillery to the public on the Camden Harbor waterfront. They released their first run of Barren’s Blueberry Eau de Vie after fermenting 16 tons of locally grown, wild Maine blueberries. Blue Barren Distillery has expanded their line of spirits beyond fruit brandies into an array of gins and rum, uniquely combining locally grown ingredients with more exotic imports.
